SHAM 69 / SVEN BENDER
While still at school, I formed my first band, Long Tall Shorty in 1978.
Our first gig was supporting Sham 69, the second, third, fourth and fifth gigs were supporting the Angelic Upstarts on their first UK Tour.
On the second of these shows, Jimmy Pursey, singer of Sham 69, saw our band, rushed us into Polydor Studios and obtained us a record contract with WEA, part of Warner Brothers. Unfortunately, our records didn’t bring the success we hoped for but the band became a very popular live act, selling out the legendary Marquee Club in Wardour Street, once a month for 18 consecutive months.
One day, before one of these gigs, I bumped into my old touring buddies, the Angelic Upstarts, who asked if I knew a bass player as they were starting the recording of their next LP at Abbey Road the following Monday.
I said, YES…..ME and commenced my career with them aged 21. A couple of months later we were on tour in the USA as part of the 3rd British Invasion.
I recorded several LPs with the Upstarts for both EMI and Cherry Red Records and toured worldwide, eventually leaving the band in 1984 and retiring from the music biz.
