A FUZZ PEDAL REVISITED
In 2010 an email from a gentleman in Arizona, USA sparked off interest in a dormant product that James How had only sold as prototypes back in the late 1960’s. The Rotosound fuzz pedal was originally manufactured to James How’s specifications back in 1967. As James was good friends with Dick Denny (who he was in the RAF with during the war) and Tom Jennings who was the Managing Director of Vox at that time.
James had Vox build the original prototypes, today only a few still exist, probably no more than a dozen! Some of these early pedals got into some famous hands – Jimmy Page for one was captured on film in France with Led Zeppelin using one in the early 1970’s.
This heritage has caused quite a stir so it was decided that upon close inspection we could ‘copy’ the original pedal with only a few small mods to bring it up to date along with a more usable spec.
With help from Andy Brunt and Dr. Barry Pyatt we set to work on re-creating the original pedal. The first unit came off the production line in September 2012
The production run was limited to 2000 units most of which have been sold all around the world!
PHASER 2 – THE PSYCHEDELICALLY BRILLIANT DREAM
Having invested in the tooling to make the Fuzz pedal it only seemed natural to bring out a complete range of other pedals. The plan was to replicate the ‘vibe’ of the late 1960’s and make the pedals very retro looking and sounding.
This was done with the help of John Oram (who was an apprentice electrical engineer at Vox in the late 1960’s) six brand new circuits have been developed that are unique to Rotosound and the pedals will be manufactured her at the factory in Sevenoaks. These are due to start being shipped out in 2014.
EXPORTING AROUND THE WORLD
With an every expanding Export market our biggest single market outside the UK is the USA. We were very fortunate in 2010 to start working very closely with Mark Blasko and OMG music. OMG music has over 20 years experience in selling accessory based items through out the USA with a fantastic rep team who have close relationships with their dealers.
Rotosound has always had a great connection with all its artists right back to the late 1950’s.
To continue that tradition Dom Fairbanks now handles all our Artist Relations, keeping up with which bands are ‘hot’ and makes sure Rotosound has a strong presence at all the happening festivals.
Some of the more up to date Rotosound endorsees include…..
The Balconies, Temples, Peace, You Me at Six, Franz Ferdinand, Babyshambles, Boy Cried Wolf, Crystal Fighters, Fatherson, The James Cleaver Quintet, The Vaccines, Skindred, Arch Enemy, Treetop Flyers, Twin Atlantic, White Lies
